"Hair Minus Plus Equals"

Image Description:

And now for something completely different at the end of a hectic two weeks of Wimbledon, England-New Zealand rugby matches, England-Australia cricket matches, Tour de France cycling and Live-8 Concerts, all of which have absolutely nothing to do with my image this month! This one is a bit of fun, which I hope you will enjoy! In the first week of my MA Photography Course, in a moment of weakness, I foolishly said that I would not cut my hair again until the end of the course. Well, here we are two years later, the course has now finished and I can cut off the pony tail before graduation on 18th July. This image represents a liberation from student constraints at the end of the course. Essentially it is a combination of 5 layers: myself with pony tail, the pony tail severed from its supporting head (I feel a bit like Sampson having lost his strength), the resulting well-groomed not so new kid on the block, the minus sign, and the equals sign. By having each of the elements on separate layers meant that they could be resized and positioned independently to produce the final composite. Enjoy!

Betty Billingham:

Do you feel quite light headed? At least summer is the right time of the year for such a dramatic change!

Gail Dohrmann:

Congratulations on your achievements! I hope you got an A (or however you grade over there!) The back of your head looks like it belongs to a different person that your picture on this site. Did you hire a model? The idea is great. The severed pony tail, though, looks a little different color than the attached one. You have created a record of an interesting personal history moment that will make you laugh as time goes on.

Kathleen Sims:

Congratulations.

Joe Norman:

Great image Brian. I do have a question. I have very thin and light hair and consequently keep it very short ~1/8” all over. This hairstyle is trouble free, however I have associated long hair with artistic creativity. Now my question - do you feel less creative? I hope not.

Shaikh Amin:

You did a good job and I enjoyed but it is hard for me to do.

Bill Thompson:

A very nicely done fun image. Eat your spinach, and you will get your strength back.
